Sometimes the MLB Trade Deadline is overblown (ok, all the time), but there's still something to be said for those who address their needs with gusto and those who muck things up with inaction and/or organizational mishaps. The New York Yankees currently fall in the latter category. Here Why The Yankees Front Office Gets An F At The Trade Deadline.
The Starter's Out
David Price? Nope. Cole Hamels? Not so much. Johnny Cueto? Try again.
Mike (freaking) Leake? Keep dreaming.
The New York Yankees' starting lineup and the bullpen's in decent shape regardless of the scuttled Craig Kimbrel negotiations, but the front office's inability to even land a mid-level starter out of a flush market all but ensures that CC Sabathia's less-effective doppelganger will be ambling out to the mound every fifth day. Unless New York works some waiver magic, coming up empty on starters is going to haunt the Yankees both down the stretch and in the playoffs if the team gets that far.
Dustin Ackley (...)
We're not here to bash Dustin Ackley. We're sure he's a nice guy who heals sick pigeons on his days off or something like that (merely speculation). However, the Yankees' major deadline acquisition just happens to be a light-hitting who has never posted an OPS over .765 (his rookie year). Since then, he's been sub-.700 in that metric, consistently falling well short of the expectations placed on him by the Mariners' coaching staff and front office. He's a workable outfield option on the bench, but REALLY? For shame.
Uh Oh, Toronto
When did the Blue Jays become the Yankees? When did George Steinbrenner's ghost take residence in Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos' body? Bronx Bombers fans can be slightly comforted by the fact that the Yankees at least entered the second level or so of negotiations on a handful of players, but with Toronto going the Full Monty on David Price, Troy Tulowitzki and the like, New York's six-game lead in the East feels like more like two or three. It's been a fantastic come-up for the Yankees this year, but a quiet trade deadline only makes the stretch run that much more tricky.
