WASHINGTON — Baseball Hall-of-Fame catcher Yogi Berra will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously, the White House announced Monday.
Berra, who died in September at age 90, was a long-time resident of Montclair. Besides his legendary career behind the plate for the New York Yankees, he managed both the Yankees and New York Mets to the World Series, the only man to do so.
Berra was one of 17 people to receive the award. Another was Willie Mays, a Hall of Fame center fielder for the New York and San Francisco Giants who finished his career in the 1973 World Series for Berra's Mets.
