The intrigue surrounding Luis Torrens is more a product of what coaches haven’t seen rather than what they have. The 20-year-old Staten Island Yankees catcher is the second-youngest player on the current roster and is coming off a torn right labrum that caused him to miss the entire 2015 season.

Torrens was a New York-Penn League All-Star in 2014 and is ranked the 12th-best prospect and second-best catcher in the Yankees system, according to MLB Pipeline. Now the Venezuela native, who signed with Staten Island as a free agent in 2013, provides a coaching staff that never has seen him play in a regular-season game with a bevy of untapped potential.
