Prior to his elbow reconstruction, the Acworth, Ga. native featured a fastball that sat between 92-94 mph and could reach 96 mph at times. His slider and curveball were plus pitches at times, but lacked consistency, and Schmidt also mixed in a decent changeup.
Schmidt's selection was announced at the MLB Network studios in Secaucus, N.J., by Landis Sims, a fifth grader from Elizabeth, Ind., who was born without hands and lower legs.
