The 1996 New York Yankees World Series championship team is special to fans for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it was the group that ended the organization’s longest title drought since they took home their first in 1923.
Before that season, the good guys had not won a championship for almost two decades, dating back to the Bronx Zoo era in 1978. They hadn’t even made a series appearance since losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981.
The Yankees are not supposed to be perennial losers. This was the team that restored New York to its rightful place as the baseball capital of the world.
