Yankees Take Outfielder, Mets Grab Pitcher In MLB Draft’s First Round

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — The New York Yankees landed a potential outfielder of the future while the New York Mets hope they uncovered another ace in the 2016 MLB Draft.

The Yankees selected Chaminade, California, Prep High School outfielder Blake Rutherford, 19, with the 18th overall pick. Rutherford hit .557 with 13 doubles and four home runs over 27 games. MLB.com said in its scouting report of Rutherford that “he has the chance to be an above-average hitter with above-average raw power.”

The Yankees tweeted that Rutherford was ranked ninth overall by Baseball America.

With the 19th overall pick, the Mets took 20-year-old Boston College right hander Justin Dunn.
