Jack Leiter could be a second-generation Yankee — in theory anyway.
The Bronx ballclub made the Delbarton righty, son of former Yankees and Mets hurler Al Leiter, its 20th-round pick, No. 615 overall during the MLB draft on Wednesday.
That the young fireballer with mid-90s fastball was available this late was no accident, as he recently informed teams he’d be attending Vanderbilt instead of making the jump to pro ball. Several scouts projected Leiter as a first-round pick, thanks to an arsenal that also includes a polished curveball and developing slider.
Maybe Bombers’ brass is hoping dad’s nostalgia for the pinstripes can help change his mind, or possibly that Jack’s high school teammate and fellow Vanderbilt commit Anthony Volpe, the Yankees’ first-round pick, could do some swaying.
