Yankees sweep away hapless O’s, continue gaining on Red Sox

BALTIMORE — When you spend a half day at the ballpark and play two games, the only way it’s worthwhile is to cop two victories, even if they are against the hapless Orioles.

Thanks to the worst team in baseball sitting in Camden Yards’ first base dugout on Saturday, the Yankees turned the marathon day into a double-header sweep.

Combined with the AL East-leading Red Sox losing to the Rays, the two victories pulled the Yankees to within seven lengths of their blood rivals. It’s the closest they have been since Aug. 2.

J.A. Happ limited the O’s to two runs in six innings in a 10-3 first-game win that drew 32,445 and featured home runs by Miguel Andujar, Brett Gardner, Gleyber Torres and Aaron Hicks.
