Yankees’ Stephen Tarpley passes late-inning test

Stephen Tarpley has made the most of his opportunity since being called up on Tuesday.

Tarpley pitched a scoreless inning for a second straight day on Wednesday in an 8-7 win over the Blue Jays, preserving a one-run lead in the eighth.

“He’s been thrown in some big spots, and he’s delivered,” manager Aaron Boone said of the left-hander. “He pitched really well at Triple-A the last several weeks. He’s got the stuff to get it done. It’s just about commanding the strike zone.”

Boone also thought Zack Britton pitched better than his results, blaming most of the lefty’s problems in the ninth on “soft contact” and a passed ball by Gary Sanchez.
