ANAHEIM, Calif. — Adam Warren paid the price for having pitched very well in relief last season.
When Yankees manager Joe Girardi decided to end the six-man rotation late Monday night, he told Warren he was going to the bullpen to provide the relief corps with a quality right-hander to work the late innings with lefties Chasen Shreve and Justin Wilson in front of Dellin Betances.
Because Warren was 5-5 with a 3.59 ERA in 14 starts and other starters have struggled, Girardi was pressed as to why he sent Warren to the pen despite nobody else in the rotation having experience working relief.
