The Yankees offseason acquisition of David Carpenter was a bust, but perhaps not a total loss.
The right-hander, who came from Atlanta with lefty Chasen Shreve in exchange for Manny Banuelos, was traded to the Nationals on Thursday after being designated for assignment last week.
The Yankees received minor league infielder Tony Renda, an infielder who’s hitting .267 with a homer and 23 RBIs in 54 games with Double-A Harrisburg. After designating Carpenter last Wednesday to make room for Masahiro Tanaka, the Yankees had 10 days to trade, release or waive him.
It’s certainly not what the Yankees expected when they acquired Carpenter.
