The Jacoby Ellsbury and Greg Bird eras in New York are officially over.
The Yankees on Wednesday night released Ellsbury, who was signed to a rich contract in 2013 but has struggled to stay on the field since.
Ellsbury last played a major league game in October 2017, due to a variety of injuries.
The Yankees still owe him $26 million-plus: $21 million for 2020 and a $5 million buyout. He initially signed a two-year, $153 million contract with the team in December 2013.
As part of several announced moves, the Yankees also designated Bird for assignment.
