The New York Yankees placed center fielder Aaron Hicks on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a right flexor strain.
Manager Aaron Boone said Hicks will be shut down from throwing for the next seven to 10 days and then will ramp back up again. Tommy John surgery was an initial concern, but has been ruled out.
Boone said he's "optimistic" Hicks will be back.
Hicks, 29, suffered an injury to his throwing elbow in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Red Sox, when he delivered a strong throw from his position toward third base in the sixth inning of New York's 6-4 win.
