Highly regarded Yankees catching prospect Gary Sanchez is getting a “cup of coffee” in the big leagues. If he gets a chance to bat, he might just cream one.
“I could see myself pinch-hitting him in some of the games,” Joe Girardi said. “He’s a pretty big right-handed bat.”
Sanchez, 22, was told to report to Yankee Stadium on Friday night after Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s season came to an end when the Railriders were eliminated from the postseason. He called his wife, mother and grandmother with the good news.
“We’re all very excited,” Sanchez said.
Hitting has been the cornerstone of Sanchez’s game since he was signed at age 16 out of the Dominican Republic and given a signing bonus reportedly worth $2.
