At this time last year, the Yankees had no obvious successor to Derek Jeter and shortstop was basically a system-wide wasteland. Now? The Yankees think they have an emerging shortstop, Didi Gregorius, in the majors and four prospects – Tyler Wade, Jorge Mateo, Hoy Jun Park and Kyle Holder – who may have a future there.
“The bottom line is any scout would turn in [a report on] each guy as a legit guy to be an everyday guy in the big leagues,” general manager Brian Cashman said. “Will that happen? Time will tell.”
There is value in having depth at the position because: 1) Shortstops are huge trade assets.
