Yankees ‘possibly’ could give 3rd veteran starter a bullpen audition

ARLINGTON, Texas — Aaron Boone said he should be ready to name the Yankees’ starter for Game 1 of the ALDS “hopefully by early next week,’’ but it’s becoming increasingly clear they intend to use most — if not all — of their pitchers in a variety of roles.

That includes perhaps using Masahiro Tanaka — or even Luis Severino — out of the bullpen, at least on occasion. And Tanaka could get some experience there as soon as Sunday in the regular-season finale against the Rangers at Globe Life Park.

While currently listed as the starter, Boone said he’d consider going with an opener for Game 162 as possibly a dry run for Tanaka.
