The Yankees are unlikely to go outside the organization to replace Austin Romine.
The Post’s Joel Sherman reported that all indications are the Yankees will make Kyle Higashioka their backup catcher behind Gary Sanchez after Romine signed a one-year, $4.1 million deal with the Tigers.
Higashioka, 29, is out of options and Yankees bosses — intrigued by his pitch framing and power potential — have wanted to give him a chance. The Yankees had been linked to Jason Castro and Martin Maldonado, who was Gerrit Cole’s personal catcher with the Astros.
The Yankees did re-sign 40-year-old Erik Kratz on Friday as organizational depth on Friday.
