Yankees pile it on behind Sonny Gray and their other 1st baseman

Aaron Hicks and Tyler Austin

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Royals stink.

Yet, teams don’t pick and choose whom they play. MLB makes the schedule and clubs have to abide by it. What teams have control over is beating the dregs, and that is something the Yankees have accomplished.

Using Tyler Austin’s two homers and Sonny Gray’s dominating pitching performance, the Yankees buried the talent-challenged Royals, 10-1, on Sunday in front of 24,121 at Kauffman Stadium and under a gloomy sky.

The Yankees’ 21st win in 25 games hiked the best record in baseball to 30-13 and allowed them to travel to Texas having taken two of three from the 14-32 Royals, who aren’t the worst team in the AL because the White Sox are.
