The Red Sox legend who mentored Severino in the 2017 offseason after a poor 2016 season noticed that the Yankees All-Star wasn’t himself for an 11 start stretch from Mid-July to early September.
Severino went 14-2 before he made his second straight All-Star game appearance posting a 2.31 ERA with 144 K’s in 128.1 IP. Things dramatically changed post-All-Star for Sevy going 5-6 with a 5.57 ERA while allowing 76 hits and .291 opponent batting average. What could have caused this? Was it poor mechanics or tipping pitches? Something just went wrong out of nowhere without anyone knowing why.
