Yankees’ payroll rank is the lowest since 1993

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Where the Yankees’ $195 million payroll would rank among MLB clubs didn’t dominate Hal Steinbrenner’s weekend.

Even though he has often said that a team doesn’t require a $200 million payroll to win a title, Steinbrenner points to the Yankees investing money in the club when money goes off the payroll.

So, it wasn’t big news to Steinbrenner that the Yankees are ranked third behind the Dodgers ($225 million) and Tigers ($199.75 million) in the majors in total payroll, according to the Associated Press. It’s the first time since 1993 the Yankees aren’t in the top two.
