Yankees may have just caught huge wild-card break

The Yankees’ chances of hosting and winning a potential wild-card game just improved.

In the span of two days, the Oakland A’s have placed starting pitchers Sean Manaea and Brett Anderson on the disabled list, with manager Bob Melvin acknowledging Tuesday that Manaea, their ace, could miss the rest of the season with rotator cuff tendinitis.

The Yankees (84-48) lead the A’s (80-53) by 4 1/2 games for the top wild-card spot, with Seattle 5 1/2 games back of Oakland. The Yankees are 6 1/2 games back of Boston in the AL East.
