MINNEAPOLIS — Damon Oppenheimer doesn’t have a deadline in place to get first-round pick Blake Rutherford signed, but the Yankees’ VP of amateur scouting says the process is moving in the right direction.
“We are talking and there is progress going on,’’ said Oppenheimer, who took the California high school outfielder with the 18th pick in the draft. “I don’t have a timetable, but we are making progress.’’
Rutherford has committed to UCLA, but with the Yankees likely to pay more than the $2.44 million slot for the 18th pick, there are encouraging indications he will opt for the money instead of college.
