NEW YORK -- One more at last call.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman made a surprise, seemingly last-second deal with the Pirates before the waiver trade deadline expired at midnight Friday, the team announced.
They acquired shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria in exchange for a player to be named later or cash.
Hechavarria is hitting .254 (66-for-260) with 31 runs, 11 doubles, four home runs and 29 RBI in 76 combined games with Tampa Bay (61G) and Pittsburgh (15G) this season.
How he'll be used: Hechavarria brings manager Aaron Boone another solid glove to the Yankees just in time for rosters to expand from 25 players to 40 on Saturday.
