OAKLAND, Calif. — The way the Yankees have been going — with injuries here, there and everywhere — it hardly seemed a surprise when pitcher Luis Severino banged his right knee while standing near his locker on Friday afternoon.
Severino cursed, hopped up and down on one foot, and slammed his hand against a chair.
On a day when Gary Sanchez and Aaron Hicks rested because of injuries and Adam Warren joined a growing disabled list, Severino’s mishap felt symbolic of a team that cannot seem to catch a break.
For the second day in a row, the Oakland Athletics feasted on a depleted Yankees bullpen, rallying for a 7-6 victory on the first hit of the top prospect Matt Chapman’s career — a two-run, eighth-inning single off reliever Jonathan Holder.
