NEW YORK — On a rare off-day in spring training last month, Yankees' manager Joe Girardi visited Shriner's Hospital in Tampa, Fla., a center that treats children who've suffered orthopedic traumas, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate, among other conditions. And born that day was an idea, one from Yanks' public relations director Jason Zillo: for every home pre-game press conference this season, Girardi will wear a different shirt representing various charities around the country. So, 81 charities figure to be represented.
On Monday, for what was supposed to be the Yankees' home opener before rain washed it out, Girardi was wearing a red Shriner's Hospital shirt.
