ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Joe Girardi had already been thrown out of Saturday's 9-5 loss to the Rays at Tropicana Field.
So, he figured, why not go all-out and cover home plate with dirt as a final act of disrespect?
"I might as well get my money's worth," Girardi said.
It was a light-hearted moment at the end of yet another disappointing day for the sliding Yankees, losers of seven of their last 10 games.
But his issues with plate umpire Scott Barry? Those were real.
Barry threw Girardi out of the top of the fifth inning after Barry tossed pitching coach Larry Rothschild.
