ANAHEIM, Calif. — Gio Gonzalez was signed to a minor league contract late in spring training to provide rotation insurance.
However, with no openings in a unit that has performed very well and removed some of the sting of losing so many big names to the injured list, there was no room for the veteran lefty who had an opt-out clause Saturday.
He exercised it and Monday was informed the Yankees weren’t putting him on the roster which made Gonzalez, who had a $3 million clause in the contract if brought to the big leagues, a free agent.
