Yankees GM: Schmidt to start season on IL, Carrasco to make roster

TAMPA -- New York Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt will begin the season on the injured list after being slowed by a shoulder injury this spring, general manager Brian Cashman announced Saturday, opening the door for Carlos Carrasco to make the team as a non-roster invite to spring training.

Schmidt is the third member of the Yankees' projected starting rotation that will be unavailable when the team breaks camp for opening day on Thursday, joining Gerrit Cole (elbow) and Luis Gil (lat). Cole is out for season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
