Chris Carter came to bat in the bottom of the 10th inning of Friday’s game between the Yankees and the Texas Rangers in position to deliver a game-winning swing. The game was tied, 1-1, with runners on first and third and one out.
But as he had done two other times in the game, and 69 other times this season, Carter struck out. Two pitches later, Ronald Torreyes’s single to center drove in the winning run, and roughly a half-hour later, Carter was a former Yankee.
About 1 a.m. Saturday, the team announced that it had designated Carter for assignment, ending his Yankees career after 57 games.
