Yankees fumble away chance to move into first place

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Yankees arrived on the Gulf of Mexico looking to get past the Rays in the AL East race.

They lost that chance, but to have a chance to leave in the same boat they arrived in, the Yankees need to play much better in several departments Sunday than they did Saturday.

After winning the first of three games on Friday the Yankees dropped a 7-2 decision to the Rays on Saturday in front of 25,025 at Tropicana Field.

Included in the reasons for the loss was Gary Sanchez’s throwing error that led to a run in the two-run sixth, Jonathan Holder not being able to put hitters away with two outs in the inning and Gleyber Torres getting caught off second base to end the second inning.
