TAMPA — The Yankees gave top prospect Gleyber Torres a chance this spring to win their open starting second base job.
He wasn’t ready.
After missing the second half of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery on his non-throwing elbow, Torres showed rust this spring.
A day after the Yankees added a proven veteran to the second base mix by signing free agent Neil Walker, Torres was one of two roster cuts following Tuesday’s 2-2 tie against the Detroit Tigers.
Torres, 21, struggled at the plate all spring, but at least ended on a high as he was 1-for-2 with a line single to left and a walk playing second and hitting ninth.
