ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Just as Al Pedrique, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre manager, was telling a few reporters late Tuesday night that he had not heard whether the Yankees were calling up catcher Gary Sanchez, his phone rang.
It was Gary Denbo, the Yankees’ vice president for player development.
Pedrique excused himself and stepped into the hallway outside his windowless office. A moment later, he returned.
“He’s going to the big leagues,” Pedrique said about Sanchez.
After selling off Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller, Carlos Beltran and Ivan Nova for prospects, Sanchez’s call-up is the latest example of a franchise in flux, one whose gaze is on the future.
