Yankees’ Chapman Walks Home Winning Run for the Red Sox

BOSTON — Aroldis Chapman walked Andrew Benintendi with the bases loaded to force home the winning run as the Boston Red Sox rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Yankees on Friday night.

It was a crushing blow for the Yankees, who announced earlier in the day that pitcher Michael Pineda would be lost for the season with a torn elbow ligament.

The defeat, at the start of a four-game series, is also certain to conjure up ghosts of last September when Hanley Ramirez belted a three-run, game-ending home run off Dellin Betances in the opener of a four-game series the Red Sox would go on to sweep, all but killing the Yankees’ playoff hopes.
