Yankees call up Thairo Estrada to replace Troy Tulowitzki

Thairo Estrada is getting his chance in the majors much sooner than anyone could have anticipated.

The 23-year-old infielder, who was shot during a robbery attempt in his native Venezuela in January 2018 and then bothered by nagging injuries upon his return last season, will be called up Thursday when the Yankees face Baltimore. He’ll replace Troy Tulowitzki, who left Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to the Tigers with a low grade left calf strain, a source confirmed.

Estrada was due to start the season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre when they open their season on Thursday, but since he was the only available infielder remaining on the team’s 40-man roster, Estrada became the logical choice to be recalled.
