Yankees' Brett Gardner scarred from childhood memories of hurricane wrecking family home

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Yankees left fielder Brett Gardner's memories are sketchy from the scariest part of his childhood.

He remembers being 6 years old and just starting first grade in September 1989 when Hurricane Hugo swept through his home state of South Carolina, killing 27.

Charleston was the town hit the hardest. Then and now, Gardner's parents live on farmland 52 miles to the northeast in Holly Hill.

"The eye of the storm went right over the town that I grew up in," Gardner said. "There was a lot of damage to everything.
