Yankees' Betances throws away opener with 8th-inning blunder

A crazy play in the Yankees’ season-opener sent Joe Girardi into a frenzy and the Bombers to their fifth straight Opening Day loss.

The game turned on a controversial call in the eighth inning of a 2-2 contest, one which resulted in the Astros scoring the go-ahead run and Girardi protesting the game while calling for a change in the rules following the Bombers’ 5-3 defeat at a frigid Yankee Stadium.

Let’s set the scene: One out and Jose Altuve at second base for the Astros. Carlos Correa – who had already homered in the sixth to tie the game against Masahiro Tanaka – hit a grounder up the first-base line that Dellin Betances fielded and threw past Mark Teixeira, allowing Altuve to score the go-ahead run from second base.
