DETROIT — If the Yankees dropped their bats into a frigid Lake Michigan they wouldn’t have gotten the wood any colder than it was at Comerica Park on Friday afternoon.
With the first-pitch temperature a half-dozen degrees north of freezing for the Tigers’ home opener, the Yankees entered the game having scored two dozen runs in the previous two tilts.
Yet, Jordan Zimmerman stifled a lineup that was without Carlos Beltran, Brian McCann and Alex Rodriguez and cruised to a 4-0 victory that was witnessed by a sold-out and chilly gathering of 45,049.
The game-time temperature was 38 degrees and got to 42 in home seventh.
