BALTIMORE - One of Brian Cashman's top lieutenants is now one of his primary competitors.
Billy Eppler was hired by the Angels as their new general manager, a source said. An official announcement is expected to be made by the club on Monday.
The Angels had set their sights on Eppler as long as a week ago, but with Los Angeles still in the wild card hunt and potentially a Yankees postseason opponent, the decision was made to wait until that was no longer a possibility.
Eppler joined the Yankees in November 2004 as assistant director of baseball operations, moving up to pro scouting director in 2006 and senior director of pro personnel in 2009 before getting the assistant GM position in 2012.
