Greg Bird could be on the move soon as the Yankees hope his lengthy comeback from a right ankle bone bruise could be coming to an end.
The first baseman was scheduled to play his sixth rehab game with Single-A Tampa on Tuesday before heading perhaps to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday in preparation for playing Thursday at Lehigh Valley, weather permitting, according to general manager Brian Cashman.
Beyond that, Cashman declined to speculate.
“He’s obviously getting closer,” Joe Girardi said. “He’s playing every day, [but] he’s not played nine innings [in the field]. It’s not the biggest deal to me, but he has not played back-to-back games in the field yet.
