Yankee fans gather at Stadium to pay tribute to Yogi Berra

On Wednesday morning the Yankees were in Toronto, but a number of fans still made their way to Yankee Stadium upon learning of Yogi Berra’s death at age 90.

Charlie Powell, a lifelong fan who lives close to the stadium and likes to greet the players as they arrive, was outside Gate 4, trying to get a memorial set up with some candles and photographs of Berra from his personal collection.

“I was always thinking of him being here for this 28th championship,” Powell said, holding out a photo of Derek Jeter and Berra, each in their uniforms, their uniform numbers — 2 and 8 — lined up in a way Powell thought was lucky.
