With 659 career homers, A-Rod one shy of Mays

NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez hit the 659th home run of his Major League career on Sunday evening at Yankee Stadium, moving within one of tying Willie Mays (660) for fourth place on the home run list.

Rodriguez's solo homer cleared the wall in right-center field on a first-inning curveball from Mets left-hander Jon Niese, trimming the Mets' early lead to 2-1.

It was Rodriguez's fifth home run of the season, and according to MLB Statcast, the blast traveled 378 feet.

After a hot start to his season, the 39-year-old Rodriguez went into Sunday's Subway Series finale with three hits in his last 24 at-bats, but manager Joe Girardi said before the game that he did not see signs of Rodriguez pressing at the plate.
