Why this year’s Hall of Fame class can teach Sabathia a lesson

MINNEAPOLIS — There haven’t been many more impressive pitching classes going to Cooperstown at the same time as the group that is heading there Sunday.

The trio of Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz certainly caught CC Sabathia’s attention.

“It’s going to be pretty cool to see Randy Johnson go in,” Sabathia said before the Yankees’ 10-1 loss to the Twins at Target Field on Friday night. “He was definitely one of my idols as a pitcher.”

Sabathia and Johnson both are tall, flame-throwing southpaws. Sabathia said he heard Johnson’s name a lot when he was coming up as a young pitcher.
