The Yankees were unlucky to lose Andrew Miller to the disabled list after he had pitched as well as any closer in baseball. But they’re lucky to have an in-house replacement in Dellin Betances who has been even better.
With Miller not expected to throw for two weeks, Betances likely will move from the setup role into the closer’s job.
“That’s probably what I’ll look to do,’’ manager Joe Girardi said. “I’ll have to sit down with our coaching staff and obviously we’re going to have to bring a pitcher up to replace [Miller].’’
While Betances may be capable of filling Miller’s sizable shoes, he leaves some pretty big ones empty himself, that 1-2 punch a huge reason the Yankees find themselves atop the AL East.
