Why Gary Sanchez is in danger of losing backup catching job

TAMPA — Austin Romine has made it a battle for the Yankees’ backup catcher job.

“He is having a really good camp. I think he is catching the ball great, he is doing a good job with our pitchers and he is swinging the bat OK,” manager Joe Girardi said of Romine, who is out of options and entered spring training as the underdog to Gary Sanchez for the job.

Sanchez, Girardi conceded, may be pressing.

“Probably a little bit,” Girardi said. “The first time you have an opportunity to make a club I am sure there is a lot of excitement in that young man.
