PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- If the Yankees must say bye-bye Birdie, they have some hope it won't be for long.
The team is "at least a little bit optimistic" the right ankle pain that has resurfaced for first baseman Greg Bird won't keep him out for long, manager Aaron Boone said.
Bird was scheduled to fly to New York on Sunday and see foot specialist Dr. Martin O'Malley on Monday. O'Malley performed surgery on Bird's ankle last July.
Bird underwent X-rays and a CT scan Saturday in Tampa after he was scratched from a lineup in Orlando earlier in the day.
