Throwing error doesn’t tell entire Miguel Andujar defensive story

A winter’s worth of work in the Dominican Republic and Tampa was aimed at not simply reducing third baseman Miguel Andujar’s errors but enabling him to make more plays to take away hits.

That improvement was on display during Thursday’s Opening Day 7-2 win over the Orioles at Yankee Stadium, but it also came with a throwing error.

Andujar, who committed 15 errors a year ago, gloved Trey Mancini’s fourth-inning grounder toward the third-base line beyond the bag and drifted into foul territory, where he unleashed a throw to first. Greg Bird stretched to his right instead of coming off the bag to catch the ball and concede Mancini a single.
