Aaron Boone wasn’t simply giving Brett Gardner a rest Sunday when the Rays started right-hander Wilmer Font.
The Yankees’ leadoff hitter and left fielder was battling inflammation in his right knee to the point he was stuffed into the Carl Pavano Memorial MRI tube Sunday morning.
“The MRI was good news,’’ Gardner said after sitting out a 3-1 loss to the Rays at Yankee Stadium. “There is inflammation in there. Hopefully, I will be back on the field in a day or two. You don’t know what to expect from the MRI but it looked good.
