This Day in New York Yankees History: George Brett’s Pine Tar Incident

July 24th, 1983, the New York Yankees were squaring up against the Kansas City Royals in a American League game. This normal game would become one of the most bizarre match ups in Major League history.

The game was being played at Yankee Stadium where the Royals were trailing the Yankees 4-3 in the top of the ninth inning. George Brett, one of the game’s best, came up with one runner on in the ninth. Yankees’ pitcher, Goose Gossage, tossed him a high fastball that was sent over the right-field fence.
