The Yankees have a new first baseman and a sad manager

Needing more production at first base, the Yankees pulled the plug on the Chris Carter experiment. They designated the reigning National League home run champ for assignment after Friday’s win, calling Tyler Austin up from Triple-A and starting him Saturday against Texas.

“We just felt it was time,’’ said manager Joe Girardi, adding Austin will be the starting first baseman with Greg Bird out with ankle and knee woes. “I really believe that Chris gave us everything he had and worked really hard and tried to make adjustments. He just never seemed to get on track, and it’s unfortunate.
