Yankees President Randy Levine may have seen his team lose in the playoffs, but he can claim victory when it comes to sandwiches.
Four years ago, when restaurateurs Jeff Zalaznick, Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi opened an outlet of their popular Italian-American deli, Parm, at Yankee Stadium, they got to talking to Levine about sandwiches.
“Randy started reminiscing about his favorite of all time,” Zalaznick recalls.
There was one mythical luncheon all-star in Levine’s memory: a Chinese roast pork and garlic-bread sandwich. It was reportedly created at Herbie’s restaurant in the Catskills in the 1950s, made popular by Borscht Belt comics like Freddie Roman, and served at various New York City diners in the ’60s before falling out of fashion and off menus.
